The height of glamour in Hollywood: The Champagne Coupe.

"Champagne is not drunk, it is savoured.
It must not be drunk too greedily.
It should be enjoyed with restraint in straight glasses,
with thoughtful, well-spaced sips".
--Colette
Whatever, Colette.
From the 1660s to the 1960s, Champagne was sipped from a coupe or saucer by an host of British royalty and Hollywood icons.
The coupe glass was designed especially for drinking Champagne in England in 1663, accordingly to Snopes.com, and was
not modeled after Marie-Antoinette's boobs. Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Bogey and Bacall, all drank deeply and glamorously from the well of the champagne coupe. They made drinking Champagne accessible and fun.
You don't have to purse your lips and concentrate on the bouquet when drinking from a saucer. You can "lap up the vino" with relish and gusto from the champagne coupe, the bubbles tickling your nose as it dissipates all too quickly. And you can't build a champagne tower without the coupe.
Somewhere down the line someone came up with a "better" way to drink Champagne: the flute. Flutes are "designed to enhance the flow of bubbles to the crown and to concentrate the aromas of the wine." But I hate them. I don't like the way they look, nor their uptight, topply feel in the hand and I really, really don't like drinking out of them. The flute has taken all the fun out of drinking bubbly. I know it's the best way to savor Champagne, but I prefer the open saucer and to drink it greedily and without thought.
